Well, BMW finally did it. After years of waiting we can now admire two brand new models in the M line-up, even though they don’t necessarily adhere to the old-school rules of the Motorsport division. The new BMW X3 M and X4 M models were launched yesterday at the same time as their Competition versions and they have been received well by the car community. Truth be told, they were a bit overdue considering the competition.
The two M crossovers come with impressive specs but numbers on paper don’t really paint the whole picture. BMW therefore, in typical tradition, published a video not long after the unveiling, explaining ‘all you need to know’ about the two cars in a condensed way. Nicki Shields steps in front of the camera once again to guide us through everything we should know and she is apparently talking solely about the Competition models.
Rightfully so too, as they will probably be the ones to get, even though we don’t know for sure just how much different they will be. The Competition versions come with a more powerful version of the brand new S58 3-liter straight six engine under the hood, delivering 510 PS (503 HP) and 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) of torque. They are also claimed to be faster than their 480 PS (473 PS) brothers, rated at 4.1 seconds in the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) dash.
Nicki goes through a couple of important bits about the two SUVS, but it’s interesting to note that the X4 M Competition shown here is wearing the Carbon Package mentioned at launch, an option that gets you a lot of the precious, lightweight material thrown all around the car. If you’re curious about how it looks, just take a closer look at this Toronto Red X4. The best part though comes after the 3 minute mark, where we actually get to listen to the new engine roar.
Check it out!
