German football team Bayern Munich is reportedly in talks with carmaker BMW to replace Audi as the club’s official car sponsor. First reports of a possible marriage between BMW and Bayern appeared a few months ago, but at the time, the talk was in its early stage.
Audi’s contract with Bayern does not expire until 2025, however, BMW has reportedly persuaded the famous football team to replace its German rival.
In order for the deal to go through, BMW would have to buy out Audi’s 8.33 per cent stake in Bayern Munich which the automaker acquired for €90 million in 2011. On top of that, it is thought that BMW is willing to pay more than the €30 million per year Audi currently contributes as a sponsor.
Meanwhile, Audi had apparently approached Bayern with a €60 million deal in order to extend their contract with the club by a further five years.
The Audi-Bayern Munich marriage started to show signs of wear and tear after the damaging emission scandal in 2015, and more recently, after the arrest of the Audi CEO.
