According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), BMW is recalling certain 2018 M5s due to a problem with the fuel pump. If the fuel pump stops working when the M5 is being driven, the vehicle may stall, increasing the risk of an accident. A total of 846 units have been recalled to address the issue.
Fixing the problem involves updating the software in the engine control unit, which should be simple enough. The process is set to kick off on July 6.
The problem has been isolated to vehicles built from August 21, 2017 (when M5 production commenced) until April 17, 2018.
In the meantime, BMW has issued a stop-sale order to dealers for those units affected, in parallel to issuing the recall notice.
BMW advises calling 800-525-7417 for more information on the subject. Alternately, customers can call 888-327-4263 to get in touch with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
