BMW is preparing to launch in 2018 a sportier and higher performance i3 electric car, according to Autocar UK. The i3S, as it is expected to be called, aims to be the market’s first proper electric hot hatch. Built upon the current i3, but with tech and features from the upcoming i3 facelift, the i3s is expected to deliver more than the current 168 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, which helps the i3 run from 0 to 62 mph in 7.3 seconds.
BMW is remaining tight-lipped on the i3S’s arrival, but a source has told Autocar that the model will become the new i3 range-topper. The electric hot hatch is expected to make its debut alongside the facelifted i3 range at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show in September next year.
The i3 range as a whole will get minor styling tweaks, but aside from adjustments to the car’s bumpers and possible changes to the headlights, the car’s overall look will remain largely unchanged. The interior is expected to be refreshed with an updated infotainment system, too.
BMW’s i3 facelifted range will include a minor upgrade to the 94Ah battery pack introduced this year, which currently delivers over 195 miles of range. The 2017 i3 will therefore almost certainly push range beyond 200 miles for the first time. Updates to the options and features list are also expected, including but not limited to new colors and trims.
