We’ve caught a couple of glimpses, via spy shots, of the Audi R8 Spyder in the past couple of weeks, seeing it drive around without camouflage. However, now we get a real look at it, thanks to its worldwide debut at the 2016 New York International Auto Show.
The Audi R8 Spyder is obviously based on the standard coupe R8, and it’s pretty apparent. The only differences are obviously the lack of roof on the Spyder, but it carries the rear vents on the engine cover over from the previous generation R8 Spyder. So this new model is immediately recognizable as such. Overall, its a very good looking car and the new Audi R8 styling lends itself to the Spyder variant better than the previous car. The Audi R8 Spyder could be the best looking convertible supercar on the road today.
Inside, the R8 Spyder is basically the same as the coupe, with only minor changes. The biggest change is the option Performance Leather Steering Wheel, which brings along three driving modes: Dry, Wet and Snow. This allows the driver to change the characteristics of the car on the fly for the current road conditions and the car’s engine, transmission, suspension and Quattro all-wheel drive system.
Overall, the Audi R8 Spyder looks great and seems like it could be even more exciting than the coupe. The added sound and excitement of the convertible makes it a home run because that’s what super cars are all about, excitement.
