The Porsche 918 Spyder was one of the biggest stars at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show.
Carrying a price tag of $846,000, the 918 Spyder has grown from the concept form shown in 2010 to the product model displayed here. The super sporty car has retain most of the concept design lines, right down to its rear bulkhead-mounted exhaust tips.
The plug-in hybrid of the Porsche 918 Spyder features a race-bred 4.6-liter V-8 is paired with an electric motor and seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission and spins the rear axle, while a second electric motor is used to spin the front axle.
The conventional engine outputs 608 horsepower with a redline of 9,150 rpm and it is based on the racing engine found on the RS Spyder Le Mans prototype. The front electric motor produces 127 horsepower while the rear one outputs 154 ponies. The total hybrid output is 887 horsepower and 940 pound-feet of torque.
Porsche 918 Spyder benefits from the all-wheel drive setup and a four-wheel steering system.
918 Spyder drivers have the choice of five different modes to choose from: E-Power, Hybrid, Sport Hybrid, Race Hybrid and Hot Lap.
A carbon fiber monocoque chassis is built underneath the 918 Spyder skin and with all the tech inside, the car weighs a hefty 3,715 pounds. The weight can be reduced with the Weissach package that brings the figure down to 3,616 pounds.
For the 0-60 mph run, owners can expect the 918 Spyder to take just under 2.8 seconds, hit 124 mph in 7.9 seconds and pass 186 mph in 23 seconds.
