Earlier this year BMW invited us to one of the most exciting driving roads in the world to sample some of its best offerings available today. While I was understandably excited about driving back-to-back the BMW M5 Competition and M2 Competition on this legendary road, I was probably even more excited to meet the man who made all of this possible in the first place, a certain Mr. Jochen Neerpasch.
If you’re a diehard fan of all things BMW M, Mr. Neerpasch needs no additional introduction as he is the one who created the brand we all love today. He was also excited to get behind the wheel of these cars and meet with one of his first creations once again: the BMW 3.0 CSL. This was the first car the BMW Motorsport division made, a sub-brand of BMW that was initially aimed at enhancing performance, not creating standalone bespoke models.
And yet, from Mr. Neerpasch’s vision came this legendary car that managed to win race after race around the world at the hands of iconic drivers such as Dieter Quester or Hans-Joachim Stuck. Thanks to the brilliant people over at BMW, the master and his creation were once again reunited this summer on the world-famous Transfagarasan highway in the Carpathian mountains.
Of course, the encounter was shot on film.
The footage is posted below, showing Neerpasch enjoying driving this BMW 3.0 CSL car in racing spec, on what could very well be the best driving road in the world. This is what some people live for and moments like this definitely won’t be forgotten any time soon.
Speaking about the experience, Neerpasch described it as being truly analogue and pure, something you rarely get these days. That’s because the 3.0 CSL had no power steering, no ABS or even traction control. Everything had to be done by the magic touch of the driver and boy, he delivered as I was lucky enough to get a ride with him behind the wheel, an experience you can read about here.
