Road-tripping in an old, classic car is one of the most exciting things you can do in a car. There’s such an element of adventure to it, as there’s no way to know if you’re going to break down once or twice, have to pull off some emergency roadside repairs or even make it to your destination at all. It’s scary and exciting but that’s the best kind of road trip. If you like such things, you should stay tuned to Jalopnik, as its editors Patrick George and Raphael Orlove are driving from Seattle to New York in a 1970 BMW 2500.
The car has an interesting story, as it used to be owned by Road & Track editor Sam Smith as a fun beater. It was then bought by a friend, and occasional contributor, of Jalopnik. However, that friend lives on the East Coast and the car was in Seattle. So George decided it would be fun to drive the car across the country for his friend.
George and Orlove have already completed their first leg of the journey and have reported that the BMW 2500 is actually surprisingly good. With its 2.8 liter inline-six engine, making a whopping 148 hp (when new, who knows how much it makes now) and four-speed manual gearbox, it’s an old-school BMW powetrain and it supposedly drives quite well. The ‘six is strong and smooth and the gearbox works well, despite being classically ’70s-vague.
We’re interested to see how this adventure plays out, as it seems like a fun one. They’re going to be covering a lot of ground in a very old, very worn BMW with a lot of miles. It could end really badly or the BMW 2500 could end up being very heroic. We’ll have to wait and see. So stay tuned to Jalopnik to find out.
