The 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is currently underway. It’s a complete tech-fest, as companies show off their latest technologies and even concept tech for the future. Some of it is so far ahead of its time that it’s hard to comprehend. However, if you want to get away from all of the tech and the gadgets while at CES, BMW can help out. BMW’s stand is currently sitting outside CES and BMW’s own driver Matt Mullins is ready to drift you around in the brand-new F90 BMW M5.
In this new video from CNET’s Roadshow, we see host Emme Hall take a spin as a passenger in the new BMW M5, while Mullins spins it around. He explains to Hall that the new BMW M5, while all-wheel drive for the first time in history, can switch to become fully rear-wheel drive at the push of a button. With traction control off and in ‘2WD’ mode, the BMW M5 is ready to drift. And thanks to its 600 hp 4.4 liter twin-turbocharged V8, it’s an absolute monster.
Mullins wastes no time and begins by quickly roasting the rear tires, getting them nice and smokey. Then, he quickly starts to drift the car around the small track they have set up. I’m not sure there’s ever a point when the M5’s rear tires aren’t spinning, as the screech of tires being turned into smoke and noise never ends. Thankfully, there are a lot of tires on hand, as shown in the video, because the M5 is very good at abusing them.
While hundreds of tech companies show off gizmos and gadgets to make our lives simpler and more connected, BMW is at CES showing off technology that makes life more fun. CES is all about the future, showing off the sort of tech that will be streamlined in the next decade or more. BMW is showing off tech that allows us to live in the past, by using it to destroy tires.
