In what seems to be one of the most unexpected drag races we’ve seen in the last months, the king of the BMW line-up takes on some peculiar rivals. The BMW M760Li xDrive is beyond any doubt a fast limousine but one mustn’t forget that it is, in the end, a long, luxurious chariot. It’s the heaviest model in this line-up even though the list includes a Tesla Model S P100D with its heavy batteries and electric motors.
Even so, as you’re about to see, you can mess with V12 power and the M760Li holds its own and finishes with its head up high. The rivals? Well, they are some of the fastest cars on the planet without the ‘supercar’ stamp used whenever mentioned. The Mercedes-AMG E63 S Estate is a beast in its new guise, using a 4-liter V8 tuned to make 612 HP and 850 Nm of torque, numbers that can make even electric cars blush. It is heavy but it is the lightest of the bunch here, tipping the scale at just over 2 tons.
Then there’s the Audi RS6 Avant in its Performance guise. The Performance title means the 4-liter engine under the hood makes 605 PS and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque, all of it sent to all four corners of the car. As a matter of fact, all cars involved in this drag race are all-wheel drive, even though the system are a bit different, as the Merc can send all of its power to the rear wheel alone.
The Tesla comes in second in terms of weight, tipping the scale at 2,250 kilos just 5 kilos shy of the heaviest car here, the 7 Series. Considering the size of its engine and body, it’s understandably the heaviest here but the BMW does come with a V12 compared to the V8 beasts around it and the electric Model S. In the end, the 760 HP and 900 Nm of torque of the Tesla made it victorious but we were impressed by how well the M760Li performed. This thing really is a rocket. Now we just can’t wait for the M5 to show up and show these guys how it’s done.
