Everyone was surprised when BMW decided not to kill the 6 Series moniker when the 8 Series was announced and instead keep it alive with the 6 Series Gran Turismo. As it turns out though, despite what people may think, the Germans really want this car to do well and they are now announcing a new engine choice for the GT model, one that will most likely be the most popular choice of the range: the BMW 640d xDrive Gran Turismo.
As you probably already know, the name means that the new 640d will be powered by the new age B57 3-liter straight six engine, fitted with not one but two turbochargers. A considerable upgrade from the older N57 mill, the new B57 comes with 7 more horsepower and a bit more torque than the outgoing engine. Overall, the new 640d will rely on 320 HP and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque, all of which sent to all four corners of the car thanks to xDrive.
According to BMW, the 640d xDrive GT will accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.3 seconds which is blazing fast for a diesel-powered car this heavy. Combined fuel consumption is said to be between 6.2 and 5.8 liters per 100 km (37.9 to 40.5 mpg), with corresponding CO2 emission levels of 163 to 153 grams per km (figures as per EU test cycle, depending on selected tire size). That means this thing can also be quite efficient even, guaranteeing a long range on a single tank.
Other models that are already available in the range include the 2-liter petrol powered 630i, 640i and its xDrive version as well as the 630d and 630d xDrive models. Pricing for the new 640d xDrive GT hasn’t been announced just yet but rest assured it will be more than the 70,550 Euros asked for the 630d xDrive model. The US customers will still have to go with the sole 640i option sold in the States if they are interested in the Gran Turismo.
