BMW currently has a bit of a tricky branding system, with its M Performance cars. They aren’t full-on BMW M cars, as they’re made entirely by BMW and not the M Division, but they aren’t just Plain-Jane BMWs. They’re sort of hotter BMWs, with a bit extra poke and some more handling performance but not enough to make life uncomfortable. However, while the names are confusing, the cars are pretty great. As evidenced by the BMW M240i.
In this new video from Cars.co.za, we take a look at a BMW M240i but not just any M240i, this one has M Performance bits. Much like the one we recently tested, their M240i tester had additional upgrades from BMW’s M Performance parts division. I know, it’s very confusing that there’s an M Performance parts division that can add parts to your M Performance car. “Why don’t they just come with those parts if they’re M Performance cars?” you might ask. We don’t know really. Doesn’t matter, though, because the cars are a lot of fun.
Let’s start with the basics of the car. Under the hood lies BMW’s new B58 3.0 liter turbocharged I6 engine that makes 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. When paired with an eight-speed auto, like in this video, the M240i can match the M2’s 0-60 mph time. So it’s fast.
But with the extra M Performance parts, it looks fantastic as well. Those wheels look very good, the front splitter looks great (although it’s very low and can be scraped easily) and the touches of red really make the new parts pop. It looks special and different and that’s what you want in a sports car. Though, in South Africa, those parts are unnaturally expensive, so maybe they’re not worth it there. In the US and EU, they’re not so bad. So if you’re looking for some parts to make your M Performance BMW look more like a proper BMW M car (it’s so confusing), these M Performance parts could work for you. So long as you understand it all.
