BMW is preparing its return to the legendary 24 Hrs of Le Mans in 2018 with a series of safety cars which led the track parade this year. The BMW M2 Safety Car came only briefly during the course of the race, which was marked by an incredible turn of events in the LMP1 and GTE Pro category.
Toyota was once again out of luck and, despite a strong performance in qualifying, had to leave France again without a reward. Porsche won the victory with the 919 Hybrid, which already celebrates its third victory in a row and again benefited from problems with the competition’s cars. In the GTE Pro, Aston Martin was able to win against Corvette in a gripping final lap. Starting in 2018, the BMW M8 GTE will also have a word for the win.
The fleet of safety cars consisted of a total of 26 high-performance cars, from safety cars, medical car and extrication cars, to emergency cars for track officials.
In addition to the BMW M2 Safety Car, various BMW X5 M, BMW M3 and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe were also used for other racing tasks. The BMW M models were used, among other things, as a track car and a medical car to support the 24-hour race of Le Mans 2017.
