The past few weeks have been filled with good news for diesel BMW fans in the US. After learning that the 5 Series will be available with one carefully picked diesel engine in North America, it seems like the 3 Series and X3 ranges will also have at least one model in the line-up using compression-ignition.
The news comes from one of our reliable sources in Munich and, claiming that the upcoming BMW G20 3 Series will be available in the US with the current B47 2-liter 4-cylinder diesel mill. Due to marketing reasons though, it won’t be sold as a 320d as is the case in the rest of the world, instead arriving in dealership lots wearing the 330d badge on the trunk. It’s a small change from the current status quo with the 328d being sold stateside with an older generation 2-liter mill known internally under the N47 codename.
As for the G01 X3 the same recipe will apparently be applied. The US-spec BMW X3 xDrive30d will be using the same 2-liter diesel engine rated at 190 HP and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. Considering the drop in weight the two cars are supposed to get, the B47 mill should prove to be enough to return great MPG readings as well as decent performance on the road.
If you’re not a fan of compression-ignition engines, you can rest assured that there will be plenty of options for you out there using Otto powerplants. In the 3 Series range US customers will get to pick from the not-yet confirmed 320i to the 330i and M340i or even the 330e plug-in hybrid. On the other hand, the G01 X3 will be available with the same engines but models will have different names, as X models usually do, from the xDrive30i to the M40i model sitting right under the X3 M high-performance SUV.
