The third generation X3 – chassis code G01 – does not seem to be an SUV of the quiet type: the new 2018 BMW X3 M40i will come to make an acoustic impression and to complement the range of the BMW M Performance Automobile with a particularly vocal alternative. A short spy video from the vicinity of Arjeplog shows the power SUV during test drives on the snow-covered streets in the north of Sweden.
The BMW X3 M40i can be recognized primarily by means of the exhaust system, which with its trapezoidal tailpipes on the left and right sides clearly distinguishes the look of the upcoming BMW X3 M with four comparatively centrally placed tailpipes. Between the two tailpipes, an indicated diffuser provides an even more dynamic look and underlines the sporty ambitions of the M Performance model.
Based on BMW’s new CLAR (Cluster Architecture) platform, the new BMW X3 will be longer, wider and roomier on the inside, while also being lighter and stiffer. It will also come with new engine options, ranging from the new B48 2.0 liter turbo-four to the B58 3.0 liter turbo inline-six. The latter will likely be what’s powering the upcoming X3 M40i variant.
Expect horsepower to be in between the 355 hp of the X4 M40i to about 400 hp, but likely closer to the former. That engine will be mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox, but a manual option is probably unlikely. xDrive all-wheel drive is also almost guaranteed to be standard.
According to our sources, the G01 BMW X3 will be unveiled in June 2017, followed by the world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Sales of the G01 X3 are scheduled to begin in March 2018.
