Even though the BMW F10 5 Series is heading out of production, the Germans are apparently not done with it just yet. Apparently, the F10 5 Series range will get the Remote Start function starting this month as a retrofit option available at most dealerships around the US. Alongside the premium sedan, the BMW F15 / F16 X5 and X6 models will also be included on this short list of models.

Remote Start will, of course, be available on the upcoming BMW G30 5 Series as well, considering the new G11/G12 7 Series has one as well. As the reveal of the new mid-size sedan looms over us, we’re eagerly awaiting to see what the Bavarians have in store for the fans of the midsize sedan.

To activate the function, you need to visit your local dealer where the process will take about three hours. Price-wise, the complete kit for a BMW 5 Series will set you back about $875 and includes the hardware parts you’re going to need as well as the man hours. For the BMW X5 and X6 models, the price goes up to $890. The feature is not available on BMW M5 and ActiveHybrid5 models, as well as the M and Hybrid equivalents of the X5 and X6 models.

Using the system is rather easy as well. Remote Start can be activated using the key fob. In order to do so, you need to press the lock button two times then press and hold it a third time for about 1-2 seconds. The system has some fail-safe features included and they will prevent you from using it for more than 20 minutes or if the car doesn’t have the parking brake on and the transmission is in Park.

Furthermore, all doors and windows must be locked, the car mustn’t be on the fuel reserve and the ECU should be free of fault codes.
