Earlier this year, BMW has unveiled a new Hommage Concept, one that is quite possibly the most important of any the brand has done so far — the BMW 2002 Hommage. The original BMW 2002 is one of the most important cars in the brand’s entire 100 year history, and many could argue that it is the single most important car for BMW. The 2002 cemented BMW into the automotive sport sedan world and launched the Bavarian brand into super-stardom.
The 2002 Hommage feature a new paint job – Space Race Metal – which combines both matte and gloss finishes for the light blue metallic color. The matte finish adorns the top section of the car, separated by that carbon band, including the roof, hood and trunk lid, which references old-school racing cars as the matte finish doesn’t reflect sun rays.
The lower section of the car has a gloss finish, which wonderfully contrasts the matte finish above. Both the matte and the gloss finish change in appearance from a brightly fluorescent blue to grey, depending on the light.
While the choice not to go with white, like the original, is interesting, this Space Race Metal color is simply gorgeous.
But now, the company is preparing to launch an updated 2002 Hommage at the upcoming Concourse d’Elegance in Pebble Beach. Our sources say the concept car will sport a new paint job and possible some minor changes which will differentiate it from the original hommage car. Just last year BMW took a similar approach with the 3.0 CSL Hommage which was unveiled first at Villa d’Este – with a neon green color – followed by an iteration of the same model in Pebble Beach.
