The BMW 1 Series received a well-deserved facelift last year but the Germans are looking to offer more performance for their customers this year, without the need of a facelift. Therefore, starting this summer, the BMW 120i and 125i will get a small boost in power output thanks to revised engines.
The upgrades will apply to both the 3-door and 5-door models and will see the 120i version’s 2-liter 4-cylinder petrol engine output go up from 177 HP and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque to 184 HP and 270 Nm (200 lb-ft). As standard, the cars will come fitted with the 6-speed manual transmission and are available with the optional 8-speed automatic ZF-sourced cog-swapper as well. Either way, the acceleration run from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) takes 7.1 seconds.
The output of the 125i models will also be increased, the new versions now having 224 HP to rely on, compared to 217 HP which is how much the current models have. The torque figure will remain unchanged at 310 Nm (229 lb-ft) of torque. In this case as well, the choice of transmission options is limited to the manual 6-speed or the 8-speed automatic, the sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) from standstill taking 6.1 seconds.
The 2-liter power units both feature latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology comprising a Twin Scroll turbo charger, direct petrol injection, VALVETRONIC and Double VANOS. As for the fuel consumption, this varies between 6.1 and 5.7 l/100 km (automatic: 5.9 and 5.5 l/100 km) for the 120i 3-door and 5-door models and 5.9 to 5.7 l/100 km for the 125i, depending on the tire sizes.
All of these new models will be replacing the current ones starting with July 2016.
