One of BMW M2’s competitors is the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45. The two sporty cars are not only close to each other in price, but also in performance and power output. To see how they face each other off on the track, German magazine Sport Auto brings the two together on the track at the legendary Hockenheimring.
The two athletes can’t be more different when it comes to engine construction. The Benz A45 AMG features a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 2.0 liter displacement and the M2 a 3.0 liter six-cylinder turbo unit with some parts from the M4’s S55.
Despite having the smallest engine capacity, the AMG makes 381 horsepower more than M2’s 370 hp. The transverse mounted engine in the AMG sends the power to all-four wheels, while M2’s longitudinally mounted straight-six offers balanced weight distribution to a classic rear-wheel drive setup.
Both cars in this test use a seven-speed double-clutch gearbox.
