BMW takes its X cars into the mountains for a snow playing session. The new X1 joins the X3, X4, X5 and X6 models in showcasing the capabilities of the all-wheel drive xDrive system.
Today, BMW offers – in 12 car series – more than 110 variants of the BMW xDrive system, including a plug-in hybrid sports car BMW i8 and the BMW 225xe Active Tourer with electrified all-wheel drive.
In the current generation of all-wheel drive system, the xDrive is part of the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM) for reliable detection and assessment of driving situations.
The BMW xDrive can be combined with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) and the Dynamic Performance Control (DPC). The fast and precise power distribution varies based on the driving situation and many times, the X cars are rear biased.
The X1 is the first X model to be built upon a front-wheel drive architecture, so compared to the other family members, it can be ordered with FWD.
In 2018, a new BMW X7 will join the lineup as a high-end, luxury SUV. An X2 is also rumored to arrive around the same time.
