The folks over at Motor.es have an interesting report on the engines of the new 2016 BMW 7 Series. According to the report, citing sources within the company, the flagship sedan will be offered with four gasoline engines, one diesel and two hybrids.
While the report seems to be fairly accurate, especially since some of those powerplants are common sense by simply looking at the new generation of “B” engines, there is also a missing piece: one more entry level diesel that is rumored to be sold under the 725d moniker. This could turn out to be the same engine as the 730d, just marketed differently in some countries.
Petrol Engines
The new G11 and G12 models will use petrol engines with three different cylinder configurations: a four, six and the V8. The entry-level petrol, sold under the 730i badge, will produce 260 horsepower from the new 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine (code B48B20O0).
The next petrol model is the 740i powered by a new 3.0 liter six-cylinder engine (B58B30M0) with an output of 330 hp.
The powerful V8 TwinTurbo is the same unit (N63B44O2) as the one used in the current generation 750i and 750Li. So the power is expected to be around 460 horsepower.
The top petrol dog remains the 760Li and its V12 6.6 liter engine (N74B66U1) that powers the Rolls Royce Ghost and Wraith. It will continue to produce 600 horsepower but apparently it has slightly better fuel consumption.
Diesels
The three or four diesels offered, depends how you look at them (725d, 730d, 740d and 750d) will have a power range from 258 to 381 horsepower. The entry level diesels are said to be the most efficient engines ever seen with unprecedented low CO2 levels.
Plug-in Hybrids
The same report suggests two plug-in hybrids, a 730e and a 740e model. The first would pair the electric drivetrain to a four cylinder engine (730e) while the second one to a more powerful six-cylinder (740e). You can learn more about the upcoming BMW plug-in hybrids by clicking here.
The 730e is rumored to produce 275 horsepower with an average consumption of 2 liters per 100 km.
Both hybrid versions can run on pure electric mode at speeds up to 120 km/h, with a maximum range of 60 kilometers, which could increase to 100 kilometers in the most powerful hybrid version.
The report also mentions a new 9-speed gearbox.
BMW will debut the G11/G12 7 Series next fall at the Frankfurt Motor Show and sales will begin in July 2016.
