According to Autosport, BMW is working on a replacement for its Z4 GT3 racer based around the M6 Coupe that could become the basis of its next contender in the United SportsCar Championship.
Reports say BMW is already working on the BMW M6 GT car and testing is scheduled for early next year.
The existing V8-powered Z4 GT3 is the base for the GTE-spec Z4 that has run in GT Le Mans class of the USC with the factory Rahal team. The Z4 GTE replaced the M3 GT in 2013.
BMW of North America has yet to confirm their participation in next years championship, as well as the news around the M6 GT.
A spokesman for BMW would not confirm that a replacement for the five-year-old Z4 was already in development, but stated that an announcement about its plans for the category was imminent.
“There will be a new GT3 car at a certain time,” he said.
“We then need to see how we solve the GTE issue.”
Since the Z4 production will end in 2016 and no replacement has been announced, the company is looking at potential replacements with the M6 being the most viable one. The other contender, BMW M4 Coupe, is already running in the DTM championship and has just scored its first championship cup.
