BMW’s i3 gets a new competitor. The VW e-Up and e-Golf were just announced prior to their Frankfurt Auto Show debut. The e-Up aims to go head-to-head with the i3 and it is priced aggressively: 26,900 euros ($35,500), 23 percent less than the i3.
The e-Up uses a 60-kW motor producing 155 pound-feet of torque and runs from 0-to-62 miles per hour in 12.4 seconds. Top speed is 81 mph. The 18.7 kWh battery gives the e-Up a range of 100 miles. Both electric cars have two “efficient driving” modes (“Eco”, “Eco+”) and four regenerative braking modes (“D1”, “D2”, “D3” and “B”) that help to extend maximum driving ranges.
Comparing the BMW i3 and VW e-Up a little closer and we ca notice some significant differences. With an overall length of 3.54 meters, the e-Up is about half a meter shorter than the BMW i3. The i3 gets 80-100 miles real-world EV range.
The VW e-Up weighs 1,140 kilograms while the curb weight of the BMW i3 is 1195 kg.
