The 2012 LA Auto Show began this week and over the next few days visitors will have the opportunity to visit the large exhibit put together by BMW of North America. The South Californian show also hosts several premieres, from the world debut of the BMW i3 Coupe, to the North American debut of i8 Roadster and other premieres such as the BMW X1 K2 Power Ride and X6 Individual Limited Edition.
At the BMW stands, customers of the brand and not only can also enjoy the M5 and M6 models, 640i Gran Coupe with M Sport Package, and a beautiful 7 Series Individual.
Without a doubt, the stars at the BMW exhibit are the i models that fit perfectly the LA lifestyle. The new i3 Coupe Concept is built atop the i3 four-door variant shown around in the last couple of years at various events around the world. Like the BMW i3 Concept, the Coupe is also propelled by an electric motor developed by the BMW Group, which develops a maximum output of 125 kW/170 hp and peak torque of 250 Newton metres (184 lb-ft), and channels its instantaneous power delivery to the rear wheels via a single-speed transmission. The electric motor draws its energy from the lithium-ion storage cells under the floor. Positioning the battery units here has the effect of lowering the centre of gravity considerably, which further adds to the vehicle’s sensationally agile handling.
The i8 Roadster Concept is a 2 seater, open top variant with the same architecture but with a lot more curb appeal. Among the most eye-catching features of the BMW i8 Concept Spyder are the upward-swivelling, windowless doors. The i8 Concept Spyder is a plug-in hybrid powered by an eDrive drivetrain combining a high-performance electric motor and an internal combustion engine. The lithium-ion battery supplying the motor with power can be recharged in an extremely short space of time from any domestic power socket. Together, the car’s minimized weight, low center of gravity and finely judged balance, coupled with a combined system output of up to 354 horsepower.
Weighing just 3,600 lbs, the i8 Spyder runs to 100 km/h (62 mph) in five seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). The fuel consumption is rated at 3 liter per 100 km or 78 MPG.
